When lessons fall in Australian time
Kraga's teachers work on India Standard Time, and live slots run from 9 AM to 8 PM IST. Australia is ahead of India, which works in your favour: on Australian Eastern Standard Time the slots run from 1:30 PM to 12:30 AM, on Eastern Daylight Time from 2:30 PM, and in Perth on Western Standard Time from 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM. The booking page shows every slot in your own time zone.
That means Australian students can take a regular after-school lesson between about 3:30 PM and 7 PM, in every state, without early starts or late nights. Weekend afternoons and school-holiday daytimes are open too.
Fitting lessons around the Australian school year
Australian schools run four terms from late January or early February to mid-December, with breaks of around two weeks between terms and the long summer holiday over December and January. Exact dates differ by state. Lessons can carry on through the term breaks or pause for family travel, and a lesson programme stays valid for 12 months, so the long summer break does not waste lessons.
Sitting a Trinity or ABRSM exam from Australia
Many Australian students know the AMEB, the Australian Music Examinations Board. Kraga's teachers prepare the Trinity College London and ABRSM syllabuses. Trinity also examines in Australia, and both Trinity and ABRSM offer digital piano exams recorded at home and submitted online, so a student can sit a grade without travelling to a venue. Check the board's own website for what is currently open in your state.
In most cases the family makes the entry directly with the board and pays the entry fee to the board. The teacher prepares the pieces and technical work, tells you when the student is ready, and goes through the recording rules for a digital exam. If your child already has AMEB grades, the teacher hears them play in the trial and suggests a starting point. Read how we prepare for Trinity piano exams and ABRSM piano exams.
Setting up at home in Australia
Australian mains power is 230 V with the three-pin angled plug also used in New Zealand. A keyboard or digital piano bought locally comes with a matching adapter. If an instrument or adapter came from a 120 V country such as the US, check the adapter's input rating before plugging it in; a plug converter changes the plug, not the voltage.
Video lessons need a stable connection more than a fast one. Keep the instrument within good Wi-Fi range of the router or use a cable, and pause other heavy streaming during the lesson. Place the phone, tablet or laptop to the side of the keys so the teacher can see both hands.
Certified teachers, live and one-to-one
Kraga is a school of certified teachers who hold Trinity College London and ABRSM qualifications at Grade 8 or above. Every lesson is live and one-to-one, from complete beginner to the higher grades; see how the course works on online piano classes. Programmes and how enrolment works are on the pricing page, and the first lesson is free: book a free trial.
Australian piano lessons: common questions
What Australian time are the lessons?
Live slots run from 9 AM to 8 PM India time, which is 1:30 PM to 12:30 AM in AEST, an hour later in AEDT, and 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM in Perth. After-school slots fit easily in every state.
My child has done AMEB exams. Can they switch to Trinity or ABRSM?
Yes. The skills carry over. In the free trial the teacher hears your child play and suggests a starting grade with Trinity or ABRSM, both of which offer digital exams recorded at home.
Does daylight saving change the lesson time?
In states that use daylight saving, lessons move one hour later in local time from October to April, because India does not change its clocks. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not change.
Can lessons continue over the summer holidays?
Yes. The December to January break is a good time for extra lessons, and because a programme is valid for 12 months you can also pause for family travel.
