The Kraga curriculum
Eight modules, in the order they are taught.
Every beginner follows the same sequence. Each row shows what a module covers and roughly when it runs. Pace varies with the student and with practice at home.
- 01
The Keyboard and the Hand
Note names and how they repeat across the keyboard, sitting height and posture, a relaxed hand shape, and finger numbers. First sounds on day one.
You can find any white key by name and play a simple five-finger pattern with an even hand.
Weeks 1 to 2
- 02
Reading the Treble Clef
Line and space notes around middle C, reading by step and skip from an anchor note, and the first rhythm values: whole, half, and quarter notes with counting.
You can read and play simple right-hand melodies you have not seen before, counting out loud.
Weeks 2 to 5
- 03
Reading the Bass Clef and Both Hands
The bass clef as its own map, left-hand anchor notes, the grand staff, and coordinating both hands in simple pieces.
You can play a short piece hands together, reading both clefs, keeping a steady pulse.
Weeks 5 to 10
- 04
Technique Foundations
Five-finger patterns in several keys, finger independence exercises, evenness of tone, and the beginnings of wrist and arm freedom.
Your fingers move independently and your playing sounds even rather than lumpy.
Ongoing from week 4
- 05
Scales and Key Signatures
The first major scales one octave, hands separately then together, the thumb-under motion, what a key signature means, and the matching arpeggios or broken chords.
You can play several one-octave scales from memory and recognise the key a simple piece is in.
Weeks 10 to 18
- 06
Sight Reading and Rhythm
Looking ahead while playing, keeping going without stopping to fix mistakes, subdividing the beat, and reading rhythms away from the keyboard first.
You can play through a new piece at the right grade level without stopping.
Ongoing from week 6
- 07
Aural Awareness
Matching pitches by ear, clapping back rhythms, hearing whether music moves up or down, and noticing tempo, dynamics, and mood in what you hear.
You can answer basic questions about a short passage played to you, which is what exams test.
Ongoing from week 8
- 08
Repertoire and a First Exam
Bringing pieces to a performance standard, choosing an exam board and grade if you want one, and running full mock exams with written feedback.
You are ready to sit Trinity or ABRSM Initial or Grade 1, or to carry on without an exam on the same footing.
